The 5 Cloud-Trends of 2020: Risks and Opportunities

The world of the Cloud has revolutionized the way of doing business in the modern era, just think that in Italy alone it is worth about 2 and a half billion euros, up 20% on 2018. This is a market of around EUR 300 billion.

But what are the trends we should expect for 2020? That is, what are the essential trends, those that make companies competitive and in step with the times?

In this first article of the new year, we want to tell you about the main trends that will influence the adoption of the Cloud in 2020. Let’s find out together.

The Cloud pays off

Among the advantages that the Cloud, as an effective business model, promises to offer is the change in financial paradigms. The shift from a capital-intensive IT model to one that leverages operational costs, reducing costs overall, ensuring greater agility and less management complexity is no small feat.

It can also be used to shift the focus of IT resources to activities with higher added value for the business, as well as to support business innovation and, potentially, to reduce business risks. A wind of change is blowing in Italy if we consider that the government has allocated 105 million euros for 2020 in the Budget Law, 97 million for each of the years from 2021 to 2024 and 47 million for 2025.

30% of the increased resources are allocated to supporting technological investments, in big data, cloud computing, ultra-broadband, cybersecurity, advanced robotics and mechatronics, augmented reality, 4D manufacturing, Radio frequency identification and waste tracking and weighing systems. Of this 30%, €60 million is earmarked for micro and small enterprises investing in Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Molise, Puglia, Sardinia and Sicily.

Incentives and support instruments

Brokerage

As the adoption of Cloud Computing continues to expand, so does the need for assistance in using these technologies. A cloud service brokerage firm is a service provider that plays an intermediary role within cloud computing.

According to Gartner, to address this challenge, IT departments should understand whether they can position themselves within the organization as a
Cloud Service Brokerage
, establishing a purchasing process that drives cloud computing adoption and encourages business units to turn to the IT team to organize consulting and support services. And that’s not all. It is necessary to emphasize how important it is that the transition to the Cloud cannot be done well without experience.

According to a study conducted by Proofpoint , researchers analyzed data from more than 1,000 Cloud Service Customers with more than 20 million user accounts and found more than 15 million unauthorized login attempts (or attacks), of which more than 400,000 were successful. What’s more, more than 31% of customers have experienced successful phishing campaigns. With this type of attack, cybercriminals use hacked cloud accounts to send phishing emails within the company: these messages appear trustworthy in the eyes of colleagues, and the attackers change the email forwarding rules or set themselves up as mandates to maintain access to the account.

Therefore, it is more necessary than ever to rely on experts in the field both in terms of the economic aspect but above all in terms of data security.

Migration or ad hoc environment?

According to Gartner , enterprises should look beyond migrating workloads and embrace an approach that involves building cloud-optimized applications. Many organizations, rather than building a cloud-specific environment from scratch, are first looking at the opportunity to migrate existing workloads to a cloud system and/or service infrastructure.

This approach can provide significant benefits if workloads consume highly variable resources, or if applications naturally scale out. However, to take full advantage of the potential of a cloud model, applications will need to be natively designed with the unique features, limitations, and opportunities of the cloud model.”

Hybrid Cloud

This is a fast-growing trend and is a solution that combines a private cloud with one or more public cloud services. Businesses choose different providers depending on which provider makes the most sense for a specific business scenario. Today, more than ever, it is necessary to be able to use a mix of methods and suppliers to meet business conditions. Hybrid cloud models provide CIOs with greater resiliency, including more than one mode for failover in the event of a service outage.

Cloud Computing & Datacenters

Apply Cloud Computing concepts to the design of future data centers and in channeling infrastructure investments to increase the agility and efficiency of EDCs. According to Gartner, this is the path that organizations must take because in public clouds, an organization acts as a consumer of services, with the service provider managing the details of the implementation, including those of the data centers and their operating models.

However, to the extent that the organization continues to create its own data centers, which are also used for these purposes, these will inevitably be influenced by the deployment models put in place by cloud service providers.
